Ages are a guide only, since children grow at different rates. Always measure the foot, and see how to measure shoe size for the method.
Children's feet grow in bursts, sometimes a full size in a few months, so the age bands here are only a rough guide. The reliable approach is to measure the foot every couple of months and buy to the current length plus a little room for growth, about half a centimetre.
Kids sizing also shifts scale as children grow. Younger children use a small-number scale that resets when they reach the youth range, which is why a toddler 10 and a youth 1 are close in length. The chart below keeps every size in one place with the foot length in centimetres so the jumps are easy to follow.
Common questions
How do I know my child's shoe size?
Measure the longest foot from heel to toe in centimetres and match it to the chart. Add about half a centimetre of growing room. Re-measure every two to three months for young children.
How much room should kids shoes have?
Leave about a thumb's width, roughly half a centimetre to a centimetre, between the longest toe and the end of the shoe. Too much room causes tripping, too little cramps growth.
When do kids move to adult shoe sizes?
Around a youth 7, which is close to an adult US women's 8.5 or men's 7, children can move into adult sizing. The foot length is the same, so convert by centimetres.
