Clothing sizes are the least standardised of all, because there is no single body measurement behind a label the way there is for shoes or rings. A size is a rough band of chest, bust and waist measurements, and brands stretch those bands to suit their own fit, which is where vanity sizing comes from.
Still, the regional systems follow predictable offsets. A women's US size is four numbers below the UK size and follows a separate EU scale, while men's tops key on chest circumference so the numbers line up more closely. The charts here give the standard body measurements behind each size so you can convert with the actual dimensions, not just the label.
Clothing size questions
How do US and UK clothing sizes compare?
For women, UK sizes run four numbers higher than US sizes, so a US 8 is a UK 12. For men, US and UK share the same numeric chest size for tops, so a 40 is a 40 in both.
What is my US size in EU clothing?
Women's EU sizes are about 32 above the US number, so a US 8 is roughly an EU 40. The chart lists the exact bust and waist ranges behind each conversion.
Why do sizes vary so much between brands?
There is no legally fixed clothing standard, so each brand sets its own fit. Two garments labelled medium can differ by several centimetres, which is why the measurement columns matter more than the letter.
How do I use body measurements to pick a size?
Measure your chest or bust and your waist, then find the row where both fall within range. If they land in different sizes, choose based on the measurement that matters most for the garment.
Where these numbers come from
Every row in this chart is anchored to body measurements in centimetres, chiefly bust or chest, waist and hip. Letter sizes and numeric sizes are both labels for a range of body measurements, not for a single value, so two brands can label the same body differently and both be defensible.
- ISO 8559-1
- Fixes the anthropometric definitions for body measurement: where on the body each measurement is taken and how. In this chart it gives the bust, chest, waist and neck columns.
- EN 13402
- Fixes how clothing sizes are designated in Europe from body dimensions in centimetres, including the pictogram labelling. In this chart it gives the EU column and the body-measurement columns beside it.
What is not standardised. There is no legally binding clothing size standard anywhere. EN 13402 describes how to designate a size from body measurements, but no law requires a brand to use it, and most do not. Every clothing conversion on this site, including this one, is therefore a mapping between conventions and not between fixed values. Always check the brand's own body-measurement table.
